As a teenager in this age of high-technology, it’s not uncommon for someone to bring their cellphone to the bathroom. Strangely enough, it’s also apparently uncommon for teenagers to soak in the bathtub with a smart phone in hand.
This is exactly what Madison Coe did one fateful Saturday evening in her father’s New Mexico home. Madison was enjoying soaking in the bath tub when her father, Logan Coe, started knocking on the bathroom door. He told her it’s time to get out. The teenager said yes, but after 20 minutes, Madison still hadn’t come out.
Her father went to knock again. Oddly enough, there was no response.
When her father finally opened the bathroom door, he found Madison unresponsive. The teenager’s phone was plugged in an outlet on the wall. The teenager was in the tub. Dead.
Madison’s mother, Angela O’Guinn-Downs said that her daughter died of electrocution. The phone was found in the bathtub. Madison had a burn mark on her hand.
Her dad, an EMT, tried to revive her and so did the paramedics on the way to the hospital. Unfortunately, the teenager was pronounced dead on arrival. Her cause of death has yet to be confirmed following an autopsy but the signs are consistent with and strongly point towards electrocution.
The teenager’s stepmother, Felisha Owens, said that Madison only did what she had done many times before. She took her cellphone with her to the bathtub and played games. Sadly, the tragedy made her stepmother realize the dangers of doing so too little, too late.
Felisha said:
“The bathroom is a place for showers and personal time and your phones don’t belong in the bathroom. Electricity and water do not mix. All it takes is a drop.”
Madison’s biological mother, Angela, said:
“She was such a bright, vibrant, very intelligent, loving, caring young lady. She had such a huge heart. Always willing to help others.”
The teenager’s untimely death has pushed the family to share what happened to Madison and warn others of the dangers of this common practice. They hope that their daughter’s death can serve as a lesson to all – don’t bathe with your phones.
